General โ
What is VariantIQ? โ
VariantIQ is a Shopify app that lets you add custom product options โ text boxes, dropdowns, file uploads, color swatches, and more โ to any product, without editing theme code. You build reusable templates and attach them to as many products as you need.
Who is VariantIQ for? โ
VariantIQ is built for Shopify merchants who sell customizable or made-to-order products โ custom apparel decorators, promotional product suppliers, personalized gift sellers, print-on-demand businesses, and anyone whose products require customer input beyond standard Shopify variants.
Does VariantIQ replace Shopify's built-in variants? โ
No โ it complements them. Shopify variants work great for simple Size/Color combinations. VariantIQ adds a layer of custom fields on top of any variant combination for additional options that don't fit neatly into Shopify's variant system.
Does VariantIQ work with all Shopify themes? โ
Yes. VariantIQ uses Shopify's App Block system, which is supported by all Online Store 2.0 themes. If you're on an older theme that doesn't support App Blocks, contact support@saasyllama.com โ we can help you determine the best path forward.
Is there a free plan? โ
Yes. The Free plan includes 1 template with up to 3 fields and dynamic pricing. Conditional rules, datasets, analytics, and webhooks require a Pro subscription.
Is there a free trial? โ
Yes โ the Pro plan starts with a 14-day free trial. No charge until the trial ends.
Templates & Fields โ
How many products can I link to one template? โ
There is no hard limit. A single template can be linked to hundreds or thousands of products.
Can I have different fields on different products? โ
Yes โ create separate templates for different product types. For example, a "Personalized Mugs" template and a "Custom Apparel" template with completely different fields.
Can I link a template to specific variants rather than all variants of a product? โ
Not currently. Template links apply at the product level and affect all variants of that product. Variant-level template assignment is on the roadmap.
What file types can customers upload? โ
The File Upload field accepts standard image and document formats. Accepted types depend on your browser, but commonly include: JPG, PNG, GIF, SVG, PDF, and AI. File uploads are stored temporarily and included in the order's line item properties.
Can I reorder my fields? โ
Yes โ drag the โก handle on any field row in the Template Editor to change its position. Save the template after reordering.
Pricing & Cart โ
How do price adjustments work? โ
Each option on a dropdown, radio, or color swatch field can carry a price surcharge. When a customer selects an option with a price adjustment, a separate line item ("VariantIQ Options Fee") is added to the cart reflecting the additional charge. The checkout total is always accurate.
Will price adjustments appear at checkout? โ
Yes. The VariantIQ Options Fee line item flows through to Shopify checkout and appears on the customer's order confirmation.
Can I offer a price discount (negative price adjustment)? โ
Yes โ enter a negative number as the price adjustment (e.g. -5.00). This reduces the cart total when the option is selected.
Rules & Datasets โ
Are conditional rules evaluated server-side or client-side? โ
Client-side, in real time. Rules evaluate instantly as customers make selections with no server round-trip. This means rule changes become live as soon as you save the template.
Can I have more than one condition per rule? โ
Yes. Each rule supports multiple conditions with AND or OR logic. Click + Add Condition in the rule editor and toggle the All / Any switch to control the logic type.
Can one dataset be used by multiple templates? โ
Yes. Datasets are global to your store. Any template can reference any dataset via the Set Options rule action.
Billing & Account โ
How is billing handled? โ
All billing goes through Shopify โ charges appear on your Shopify invoice. There is no separate SaasyLlama account or credit card required.
Can I switch between Monthly and Annual? โ
Yes. Shopify handles the plan change and prorates the difference. Contact support@saasyllama.com if you need help switching.
What happens to my data if I cancel? โ
Template configurations, fields, rules, datasets, and analytics are retained for 30 days after uninstall in case you reinstall. After 30 days, data is permanently deleted. Your Shopify products and orders are never affected.
Can I use VariantIQ on multiple Shopify stores? โ
Yes โ each Shopify store requires its own VariantIQ installation and subscription. Templates, datasets, and data are scoped per Shopify store.
